The problem: Rainforest lodges clear forest to make room for giant dining areas, sleeping bungalows, pathways, swimming pools and even football (soccer) fields which rids the area of flora and fauna. To compensate, these lodges create trails away from the lodge so you have a chance to see wildlife but as more people visit more animals retreat into the forest.
The solution: Camping in the forest provides the best way to see unsuspecting wildlife and staying mobile gives you the best chance of experiencing various zones, niches and habitats preferred by different species. We've created these "base camp" trips to bring you into the forest for a more intimate experience with the Amazon. You will bushwhack new trails and sleep in hammocks among the crickets, frogs and night birds.
How it works: Expect anywhere from 2-4 hrs transfer per day in our motorized boat between campsites. We will either choose a site we've camped at before or create a new site at a new location. We will arrive at our campsite early, set up our communal group area mosquito net and tarp followed by individual hammocks and bug nets. While our chef prepares our meals we have the majority of the day to explore our surroundings by clearing pathways with machetes, walking along beaches or paddling canals and oxbow lakes in "packrafts". These boats are very lightweight (2.5kg / 5.5lbs) and can easily be carried into the forest and inflated at an oxbow lake inland from the main river. In the late afternoon and evening you can enjoy the sounds of the forest from our 12X12 screen room or from your own hammock and bug net. You will be sleeping in your hammock which keeps you off the forest floor and away from any critters. Please let us know if you prefer a tent for more options.
What we include: These privately guided motorboat river trips include private transfers, a personal chef, group dining mosquito mesh tent and your own personal hammock sleeping quarters. At each campsite we will have options for jungle hiking, oxbow lake exploration, fishing and night walks. We have created a different kind of experience for those looking for real expedition-type hammock camping in areas which are free from tourism.
